Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are a malicious way of disrupting a website by overwhelming its infrastructure with a large amount of internet traffic. This can prevent users from accessing it and cause disruption to companies who may lose revenue as a result. Hacktivists may use DDoS attacks to take down government sites or companies, while malicious actors may launch targeted DDoS attacks as a form of harassment. DDoS attacks can also be used to cause harm to companies or individuals. On June 8, 2023, the US government seized 13 domains linked to ‘booter’ sites – sites which offer DDoS-attacks-for-hire services, and on June 1, 2022, Google reported that it had blocked the “largest” DDoS attack on record. In February, NATO was the victim of a series of DDoS attacks linked to the Russian hacktivist collective Killnet, while in June 2023, Russian hacking group NoName used targeted DDoS against the Swiss government. In November 2021, there were also a series of DDoS attacks launched against those streaming the survival horror game, Dead By Daylight, which led to some streamers being ‘doxxed’ – having their personal or identifying information posted publicly online – and ‘swatted’ – having false reports of them being a danger to themselves or others submitted to the police, causing armed police officers to forcibly enter their homes.
