The Asia-Pacific region has been a hotbed of cybercrime in recent years, with 59 percent of businesses in the region reporting a cyber attack in 2022, 32 percent of those being victims of multiple attacks and a shortage of 2.1 million cyber security professionals. Examples of recent cyber security incidents in the Asia-Pacific region include the data breach of New Zealand IT managed service provider, the data leak of Australian health insurance provider Medibank, the data breach of Japanese car manufacturer Toyota, the data breach of Australian online retail marketplace MyDeal, the discovery of numerous cyber security vulnerabilities in Chinese GPS tracker MiCODUS, the data breach of Australian telecommunications company Telstra and the data breach of Australian telecommunication company Optus. Other incidents include the potential cloud misconfiguration of car manufacturer Toyota’s servers, which exposed the data of more than two million customers, and employees of South Korean electronics company Samsung allegedly leaking confidential company information to AI-powered chatbot, ChatGPT.
