Summary of Cyber Security Hub Survey Results from May and June 2020:
– 41 percent of survey respondents described their job function as cyber security, 27 percent as IT, and 9 percent as corporate management
– Cross industry representation from automotive, education, financial services, government, healthcare/life science, manufacturing, media/telecommunications, retail/consumer packaged goods (CPG), technology, travel/hospitality and utilities/oil and gas/energy
– 40 percent of cyber security respondents said their approach to security had not changed as a result of the global pandemic
– 20 percent of top cyber security talent was made redundant
– 67 percent of respondents reported their cyber security budgets were decreasing or staying the same
– 84 percent reported the overall state of cyber security was improving
– Top three areas of focus during the pandemic were security awareness, detection and incident response, and access controls
– Endpoint security spend increased from the fifth highest to the second highest spend from November 2019 to June 2020
– Compliance priority decreased 17 percent from 2019 to 2020
– SIEM use increased 9 percent from 2019 to 2020
– Nearly half of the cyber security community perceived a shortage of talent
– Over one in five respondents reported implementing mentor programs and 20 percent saw interns as the answer
– 10 percent swing from the concept of industry consolidation to defense in depth
– Increased pressure on cyber security professionals due to unemployed cyber security talent, cyber-criminal sophistication and collaboration, and a new wide-open
